As Donald Trump waits on whether or not his nominee for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is confirmed by the Senate, his team are doing their best to defend the president's agenda. During an interview on Fox News, Sarah Huckabee Sanders continued that theme by attacking the Democratic Party.

Sanders on Democrats

Since the day Donald Trump pulled off his upset win over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, he's been at odds with the entire Democratic Party.

Since then, the Trump presidency has been one of the most controversial in American history, with his questionable policy proposals, controversial cabinet nominations, and reckless behavior on social media. In the year and a half that he's been in office, Trump has faced constant pushback from Democrats, while several members of his administration have either been fired or decided to resign, including now former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. In Tillerson's place, Trump has nominated Mike Pompeo, who is currently serving as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

With Mike Pompeo's nomination hanging in the balance, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders put the blame on Democrats for the delay during an April 23 interview on Fox News.

"At some point, Democrats have to decide whether they love this country more than they hate this president," Sander said. "They have to decide that they want to put the safety and security and the diplomacy of our country over their own political games, and we are very hopeful that they will," she added.

"Mike Pompeo is a highly qualified individual.

Top of his class at Harvard. First in his class at West Point. He's been an impeccable CIA Director. He's done a great job and confirmed there," Sarah Huckabee Sanders went on to say.

Twitter reacts

Following Sarah Huckabee Sanders' critical remarks about the Democrats, critics took time to lash out in response. "Trump needs to choose between America and Russia," one tweet read.

"He LIED about his military service. Confirming him is an insult to everyone who has served. Of course trump would know nothing about that," a Twitter user wrote.

"Those of us who put the country first, say never Trump or his nominees. Pompeo is a cancer," another tweet added. "You know why we hate him? Because he’s dangerously unfit to be the president," an additional tweet went on to note.

"Democrats are putting safety and security first. Why won't you, the president, and other Republicans agree with sensible gun control?" a social media user wondered. "Hatred? God forbid someone might have a real issue with Pompeo. Not everything is about Donald Trump," a follow-up tweet read.
