The most talked about political headline over the weekend has been the news that former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn lied to the FBI in regards to his previous contacts with Russia. In response, Donald Trump decided to give his thoughts on social media.

Trump on Flynn

One of the biggest stories of the year took place on Friday when Abc News' Brian Ross reported that Gen.

Michael Flynn, formally of the Donald Trump administration, lied to the FBI while discusses his interactions and contact with Russia officials. The story originally claimed that Flynn told authorities that he was instructed by Trump during the campaign to speak to Russian officials. However, the network later clarified their reporting to note Flynn actually came clean that he was told to speak to the Russians during the transition into the White House about issues dealing with the Islamic State. In response, ABC News announced that they had suspended Ross, but that only furthered the divide among those in Washington and around the country.

Since them, critics have used the reporting as yet another example of potential collusion with Trump and the Kremlin, though supporters of the president have pointed to the inaccuracy of the original ABC News report to claim it was just another hit piece by the media. In a series of December 2 tweets on the issue, the president didn't hold back his thoughts and appeared sympathetic to his former National Security Adviser.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday night, Donald Trump went off on the aforementioned report, doing so with a sympathetic message about Michael Flynn and an attack on former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. "So General Flynn lies to the FBI and his life is destroyed, while Crooked Hillary Clinton, on that now famous FBI holiday 'interrogation' with no swearing in and no recording, lies many times...and nothing happens to her?" Trump tweeted, before asking, "Rigged system, or just a double standard?"

In a follow-up tweet, Donald Trump stuck to the message of bashing Hillary Clinton over the use of her private email server during her time as Secretary of State.

"Many people in our Country are asking what the 'Justice' Department is going to do about the fact that totally Crooked Hillary, AFTER receiving a subpoena from the United States Congress, deleted and 'acid washed”' 33,000 Emails?" Trump wrote, while concluding, "No justice!"

Trump on ABC News

In his third and final tweet of the night, Donald Trump gave rare praise to a mainstream news outlet that wasn't Fox News, doing so after ABC News suspended Brian Ross for the inaccurate reporting about Michael Flynn. "Congratulations to ABC News for suspending Brian Ross for his horrendously inaccurate and dishonest report on the Russia, Russia, Russia Witch Hunt," Trump tweeted, while stating, "More Networks and 'papers' should do the same with their Fake News!"

Moving forward

While Michael Flynn has reportedly reached a deal to plead guilty in regards to lying to the FBI, it's currently unknown what information he has given up to special counsel Robert Mueller who has been leading the investigation into Russian election interference. With Donald Trump remaining defiant, only time will tell how it all plays out.
