During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in 2016, ISIS had unleashed a suicide bombing frenzy in Baghdad that had claimed 300 lives and this year, they have reignited their Reign Of Terror during the holy month yet again. ISIS claimed responsibility for the blast that took place in Baghdad yesterday in an ice cream parlor and are carrying on with their bloody history of terror attacks during the month of Ramadan.
Two separate blasts in crowded areas
ISIS are known for their particularly evil ways when it comes to attacking public places, and yesterday in Baghdad they attacked crowded areas in order to spread maximum devastation during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
One bomb went off in an ice cream parlor, that is known to be quite popular with the locals, while another one exploded in a car during rush hour, causing the deaths of 31 people in total according to the officials in Iraq.
It should be noted that ISIS has claimed responsibility for the ice cream parlor suicide attack only, which happened at a time where people break their fast at night, hence there was a fair amount of people when the bomb exploded. Restaurants and eateries in Baghdad are usually very crowded during those times during the month of Ramadan since people rush to their favourite spots to have their only meal of the day. Children are believed to be among the victims.
The rationale behind the attack
ISIS have been on the back foot for some time in the war but it according to experts, they engage in wanton suicide attacks in order to strike fear into the hearts of Iraqis and show them who is in charge. An expert on middle eastern affairs, Hayder al-Khoei, spoke to a news outlet and stated, "[ISIS] wants Iraqis to fear going out and this is to show they are still present and able to strike the heart of the Iraqi capital, even as they are being defeated on the battlefield."
The car bomb exploded at a thoroughfare in Baghdad, near the Public Pensions Office and claimed the lives of 14 people.
The officials have also reported that 37 people were seriously injured in the car bomb attack that sent shock waves across Baghdad yesterday. The menace of ISIS has completely destroyed normal life for the population in Baghdad and other parts of Iraq and the latest attacks only serve to show the sort of fear that Iraqis live with on a day to day basis. Hopefully, the coalition will defeat ISIS as soon as possible so that the reign of terror is ended.
