sega has announced a new collection of classic Video Games from the Sega Genesis (aka Mega Drive in certain territories) console era. They will soon become available on modern platforms. The Sega Genesis Collection (aka Sega Mega Drive Collection for the UK) is scheduled for release on May 29 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Steam.

Here we go again!

The Sega Genesis Collection was first announced via Twitter.

The tweet reads, "SEGA Genesis Collection coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 29." According to Sega, the collection will contain 50 titles from the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console, all of which will receive enhancements for the modern era including achievements, online multiplayer, rewind, mirror mode, and save states.

This wasn't the first time Sega had released such a collection. Back in 2006, the company released a similar collection containing 48 titles for both the PS2 and PSP. The collection also made its way onto the PS3 and XBox 360 in 2009. And just last year, the company released a flashback console that included 85 of their classic titles such as those from the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Highlight Reel

Along with the announcement, Sega also released a trailer highlighting some of the classic titles the collection will contain. The games in the trailer included notable titles like Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Altered Beasts, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, Revenge of Shinobi, Space Harrier, and ToeJam and Earl.

What about the Nintendo Switch and Atari Box?

Undoubtedly, many are pondering the absence of a Nintendo Switch version in the announcement. Unfortunately, Sega has given no word on the existence of a port for the Nintendo Switch. As strange as it seems — especially given the collection would be a fine fit for the portable console and its retro titles are by no means demanding on the hardware — it isn't mandatory, but every Sega title is expected to appear on a Nintendo platform.

It's also common for late announcements for ports to Nintendo platforms to occur. Still, there is no guarantee that the Sega Genesis Collection will ever become available for the Nintendo Switch. Perhaps, Sega has other means for releasing retro titles on the Nintendo Switch later this year or beyond.

Another console Sega might consider for porting the collection to is the upcoming Atari Box. The console is designed for both retro and modern gaming, though there is no word from Atari on whether they were contacted by Sega for future releases. Hence, this one is also up in the air. Time will tell for both platforms.
