While Rockstar has never confirmed that “GTA 6” is definitely happening, all indications seem to point to a future release of the latest installment from its Grand Theft Auto Series. But it’s not likely to happen anytime soon.
Busy Bee
Despite the company’s nearly defeaning silence over the past few years, Rockstar seemed to have been a busy bee working on a few things. Among these things, apparently, is the second installment of another of its hit games — “Red Dead Redemption”. Set to be released sometime in Spring of 2018, “Red Dead Redemption 2” is expected to parallel — if not exceed — record hit sales of its much-adored predecessor.
“RDR 2” is believed to be one of the foremost reasons why Rockstar has had no time to confirm — much less develop — anything related to the highly anticipated sixth installment of its hit “Grand Theft Auto” series.
Up Next
With the impending release of “Red Dead Redemption 2”, it is believed that Rockstar is well on its way to developing the much awaited “Grand Theft” sequel, which, so far, seems to be the installment that Rockstar has taken the most time to develop. The longest gap between the release of one “GTA” installment after another was five years — “Grand Theft Auto 5” was released in 2013, while its predecessor, “Grand Theft Auto 4”, was released in 2008. Given that Rockstar hasn’t yet made any official announcement regarding any impending development — much less release — of “Grand Theft Auto 6”, it’s highly unlikely that they would be able to come up with the game just five years after its forerunner.
Legal Dilemma
Another possible reason behind the long “GTA 6” delay is the impending lawsuit that former Rockstar big boss Leslie Benzies has previously filed against the company. Benzies’ legal action against the “GTA” developers stemmed from disputes over earnings involving the “Grand Theft Auto” series, among them Rockstar’s latest “GTA” hit — “GTA Online”.
The ongoing legal drama between Rockstar and Benzies is expected to have profound effects on all future developments relating to the “Grand Theft” series. Legal constraints are likely to hinder Rockstar from developing “GTA” games that are all too similar to its predecessors — unless the company is willing to split more of its profits to its estranged head.
Imminent Release
Despite the many problems that seemed to have contributed to the long delay of the much-awaited installment of the “Grand Theft Auto” series, Rockstar is expected to make formal announcements regarding its fate sometime next year. It’s also owing to the same problems that “GTA 6” is expected to be a deviant from all other “GTA” installments before it.
