Playstation proves its dominance over the competition yet again. The website PlayStation Universe reports that the console leads over its main competitors in terms of sales, the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch. Even though Nintendo’s Switch has taken the gaming world by storm since its release earlier this year, PlayStation continues to outsell both Nintendo and Microsoft.
Additionally, the PlayStation Store enjoys “Destiny 2’s” record-breaking sales. No doubt, the recently-released video game is boosting PlayStation and how the company is faring since its release earlier in September.
PlayStation strides ahead of competition in number of units sold
A new graphic just released by VG Chartz demonstrates PlayStation’s reign in terms of sales, selling more than 62 million consoles over the brand’s lifetime. This figure rockets over the 30 million consoles sold by Microsoft and the approximately 5 million units sold by Nintendo through July.
Monthly figures tell a similar story. The PS4 sold approximately 900,000 units, exceeding both the Switch (727,043 units) and the Xbox One (268,205 units).
These companies have been battling for ascendancy for a long time. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 both launched in November 2013, while the Nintendo Switch came out in March of this year.
While these sales figures indicate PlayStation’s control in the gaming market, how long will its reign last especially as companies scramble to develop more innovative ways to play?
‘Destiny 2’ celebrates huge financial success with its release on the PlayStation Store
PlayStation continues to enjoy commercial success with the recent release of “Destiny 2” on the PlayStation Store.
“Destiny 2” was released earlier this month on September 6. The incredibly popular video game broke records as the"largest ever day one sales globally for PlayStation Store,” according to Activision’s recent press release.
“Destiny 2” beat out its predecessor, “Destiny,” in terms of digital sales during its launch week. Activision CEO Erin Hirschberg said, “Destiny 2 is off to a strong start as the number one console gaming launch week of the year to date.”
No doubt, “Destiny 2’s” monumental digital sales numbers are a huge boon to PlayStation’s financial success.
It will be interesting to see what PlayStation’s next moves are as it continues to try and outpace the competition. With the advent of hybrid consoles like the Switch, will PlayStation be able to maintain its dominance?
