For those who have never heard of the term, "Realm Reborn treatment," it’s a popular one coined after the disastrous launch of "Final Fantasy XIV." In response to the backlash, Square Enix decided to bring in a new team to rework the failing and relaunched it under the new and improved "FFXIV: A Realm Reborn."
Since then, the term has been used to suggest a sort of Plan B to developers who might run into similar debacles with their Video Games. Currently, there are a handful of titles with disastrous launches that could use the Real Reborn treatment heading into 2021. Here is a small list to go through.
'Bleeding Edge' (Xbox One/PC)
Video games live and die by their content. But if they lack meaningful content on launch, then they are mere flashes in the pan. Such is the case of "Bleeding Edge," the competitive brawler from the studio, Ninja Theory. This 4 vs 4 melee combat game featuring an insane roster, class system, and some over-the-top fighting ultimately lacked depth and a considerable amount of content on launch. Worse, it's been that way since. Hence, "Bleeding Edge" inadvertently lived up to its name.
'Cyberpunk 2077' (PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series X/PC)
Released by CD Projekt at the end of a disastrous 2020, "Cyberpunk 2077" was meant to be the payoff for many gamers that year. Unfortunately, the RPG was an unfinished product that hid a web of deceit spun by the publisher. As a bold new IP from the studio behind the critically acclaimed "The Witcher" franchise, "Cyberpunk 2077" was both an embarrassment and a missed opportunity. Fortunately, the game is receiving two major updates later this year that could dole out the RRT. Fingers crossed.
