There are four teams left to decide who will be crowned Super Bowl champions for the 2020 regular season. Fourteen teams reached the NFL playoffs, but 10 were not able to reach the goal of the ultimate prize in football.
Those teams will have to decide if they want to bring back the majority of their key players and run it back or retool for next season. Here is the most important free agent for each of the 10 teams that were eliminated from postseason play.
Baltimore Ravens - Matthew Judon, EDGE (Age: 29)
Playing on the franchise tag this season, Judon finished with six sacks in 14 games in 2020 (also had a sack and a forced fumble in two playoff games). He has sacked the quarterback 34.5 times in his five seasons with a career-high of 9.5 in 2019. Judon has been named a Pro Bowler each of the last two seasons.
Chicago Bears - Allen Robinson, WR (Age: 28)
Despite playing on a Chicago team that never had an established star passer, Robinson has still been one of the most productive wide receivers in the league. In the 2020 season, Robinson finished sixth in the NFL with 102 receptions and ninth with 1,250 receiving yards.
Cleveland Browns - Olivier Vernon, DT (Age: 30)
While Vernon hasn't played in all 16 games since 2016, he has helped to terrorize opposing quarterback as a tandem with teammate Myles Garrett. Despite missing two games in 2020, he had nine sacks which is the second-highest record of his nine-year career.
Indianapolis Colts - T.Y. Hilton, WR (Age: 31)
This was going to go to Philip Rivers, but with the announcement of his retirement, Hilton receives the nod. The four-time Pro Bowler has shown signs of slowing down, but he did have a four-week stretch from Week 12 to 15 where he caught 21 balls for 348 yards and four scores.
Los Angeles Rams - Leonard Floyd, EDGE (Age: 29)
After never quite reaching his potential with Chicago after they selected him ninth overall in 2016, Floyd was able to put together his best season in 2020 during his first year with the Rams. His 10.5 sacks were good for ninth in the NFL, and Floyd also finished with career-highs in tackles (55), tackles for a loss (19), and fumble recoveries (2).
New Orleans Saints - Trey Hendrickson, EDGE (Age: 26)
In 2019, it was Shaquil Barrett who came out of nowhere to record 19.5 sacks which were followed by him signing the franchise tag for 2020. Will the same occur for the 2020 version of Barrett in Hendrickson who came out of nowhere to record 13.5 sacks after having just 6.5 through three seasons?
Pittsburgh Steelers - JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR (Age: 24)
This may have gone to Bud Dupree, but a torn ACL suffered in December leaves his status for the beginning of next season in question. Smith-Schuster has not duplicated his marvelous year in 2018, but he did finish ninth in 2020 with 97 catches. Pittsburgh does have Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson producing at wide receiver as well, so it is unclear if the Steelers will be fully engaged in trying to bring him back.
Seattle Seahawks - Chris Carson, RB (Age: 26)
Combining to rush for 2,381 yards in 2018-19, Carson wasn't handed off the ball as often and missed four games in 2020. He still averaged a career-best, 4.8 yards per carry, fumbled a lot less frequently than he previously had, and scored nine times (five rushing touchdowns, four receiving).
Tennessee Titans - Corey Davis, WR (Age: 26)
Selected fifth overall in 2017, it was a disappointing first three seasons for Davis. That wasn't the case in 2020 as he nearly finished with 1,000 receiving yards (984) despite missing two games and averaged over 10 yards for each time he was targeted (10.7 according to Pro Football Reference).
Washington Football Team - Brandon Scherff, G (Age: 29)
The fifth overall pick in 2015, Scheff has been a stalwart for Washington's offensive line and has been named to four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons. According to ESPN, this season Scherff was the first Washington player to be named First Team All-Pro since punter Matt Turk in 1996.
