Although the signs and symptoms of twin pregnancy differ from woman to woman, there are major signs that could indicate that a woman is having more than one baby. While most pregnant women with twin experience the same pregnancy symptoms as those with one, others often experience more severe symptoms.
Rapid weight gain
Women carrying two babies are likely to gain more weight than those carrying one baby. Nevertheless, other factors may influence rapid weight gain such as recessive consumption of fatty and sugar-rich foods. However, if the caregiver suspects multiples, he will investigate further.
Early fetal movements
Between 16 and 25 weeks of gestation, the unborn child begins to move within the womb. However, some moms of twins who have experienced multiple pregnancies revealed that they experience fetal movement as early as 12 weeks gestation.
Extreme tiredness
Women who are pregnant with twins easily feel exhausted as their bodies adjust to the increased energy requirement due to the babies growing in their wombs. The extreme tiredness experienced could also be as a result of iron deficiency anemia and the extra pressure which is put on blood supply by the unborn twins.
Intuitions
Although this has not been scientifically proven, most pregnant women with twins usually know they are carrying more than one baby before it is confirmed by a doctor through an ultrasound scan.
Elevated hCG levels
Pregnant women carrying more than one baby have increased levels of hCG, a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy.
