Warning: this is not one of the most important tech developments in recent memory. Drivers on the road will be grateful to Audi regardless, especially those that need to be bothered to find their toll tag on a daily basis for their commute.

The car company has developed new tech that can make the toll tag a thing of the past. That means no more interference at the top of your windshield to deflect the sun into your eyes at strange angles. Or no reaching into the glove compartment while trying to keep your hand on the steering wheel and an eye on the road as traffic comes to a halt for everyone doing the same.

Way to go, Audi.

Audi changes the toll game

Engadget reported of the tech development early Friday morning. They report that Audi is working on a feature that will be built into Cars during the manufacturing process, called the "Integrated Toll Module," or ITM for short. The gadget will be located behind the rear view mirror, where it will be rendered invisible to the formerly distracted driver.

The device eliminates the need for a toll tag (i.e. E-ZPass) on the windshield of a car to get through government tollbooths. Supposedly, it will work on almost 98% of the toll roads in the country, regardless of government jurisdiction. It will even work on some roads in bordering countries Mexico and Canada.

The only bad news is that the tech isn't available yet, and won't be ubiquitous aboard all Audi vehicles. It's not yet clear which vehicles will be equipped and which ones won't. It will also likely affect the pricing of the cars. Engadget reports that the A8 will be one of the vehicles equipped with the ITM.

Audi pursues more tech options

On the same day, Audi teased the release of 2019 A6, their latest vehicle. CNET suggests that the vehicle could be unveiled in the next couple of weeks. There's an expectation that the car will have a hybrid system, as well as various technological developments. Beyond that, not much is known, although an upcoming show in Geneva could provide some answers.

The German automaker appears poised to make a big leap forward in the car tech industry this year. The whole industry is constantly in need of improvement, so Audi wants to be ahead of the eight-ball before the big auto show in Geneva. Maybe improving the morning commute is not the most drastic news in the world.

But it's the little things that matter to the American consumer. It's those things that will elevate the international profile of Audi.
