Now that Samsung has made its Galaxy Note 8 phablet officially available, the South Korean tech firm has set its sights on a new project. The tech company is currently working on its Galaxy S9 Android smartphone.

Speculations about Samsung’s 2018 smartphone have been mounting up on the internet for some time. However, according to SamMobile, the tech company has kicked off the software development for its two Galaxy S9 variants.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 will be under the firmware number G960FXXU0AQI5, while the S9 Plus will be under the firmware number G965FXXU0AQI5. The software that the tech company is developing would likely be Samsung Experience UI’s latest version, which will be custom for Samsung’s 2018 smartphones.

According to Phandroid, the firmware numbers also unveiled the model numbers of the two 2018 Galaxy S smartphones as SM-G960 and SM-G965. The model numbers appear to conform with its predecessor’s model numbers. The company launched the S8 with a model number SM-G950, while the S8 Plus has a model number SM-G955.

Nonetheless, the Galaxy S9 is expected to arrive with a camera that can capture 1,000 frames per second, allowing the smartphone to capture a video with high-quality slow-motion. While the tech company may soon launch artificial intelligence (AI) chips to advance S8 and Note 8’s Bixby feature, the 2018 smartphones may also benefit from this technology.

Release date

With Samsung announced its S8 and S8 Plus in late March and released the duo in the second half of April, Galaxy S9 smartphones’ software development appears to suggest that the tech firm will launch its 2018 mobile devices earlier next year. The handset might take Apple’s iPhone X out of the spotlight.

Devices to have Snapdragon 845 chipset

Samsung’s 2018 flagship smartphones are expected to come along with Snapdragon 845 processor and the tech company’s own Exynos 9810 system on chip (depending on the region). The smartphones will likely feature a 6GB of RAM and a 64GB of internal storage. The handsets are expected to feature Note 8’s dual camera setup. The smartphones are also expected to arrive with a bezel-less design, which is the characteristic of the tech firm’s recent smartphones.

The smaller variant will likely have a 5.8-inch QHD Super AMOLED curved screen, while the larger model will feature a 6.2-inch display. The company has yet to reveal the price of the smartphones, but the devices are expected to have a price tag around $920 and $1,040.
