Apple announced the iPhone X to be the very first iPhone variant to arrive with a bezel-less design, but the company’s future iPhone’s might be foldable. A new report from The Investor claims that Apple is teaming up with LG on a new foldable iPhone.
LG Display has been tasked by the Cupertino-based tech firm to create a foldable OLED panel for a new iPhone. LG Innotek has already established a team that will develop the foldable handset’s flexible printed circuit board. LG is expected to kick off the production of the foldable OLED display in 2020.
Nonetheless, there’s a possibility that Apple could delay the smartphone’s launch at a later date.
Foldable OLED panel
Apple usually starts working on its new device one year before launch so that the company could share information with its suppliers regarding the device’s key features. LG is also believed to have finalized the prototype of its foldable OLED panel two or three years ago and that the company has been enhancing its durability ever since.
A collaboration between Apple and LG is not surprising. The Investor has reported back in July that the Cupertino-based tech firm invested about $2.70 billion in LG to secure OLED panels’ production. It was speculated at the time that the companies might have a partnership for one of Apple’s future iPhones.
With Samsung being the world's premier OLED manufacturer capable of supplying the demands of Apple, it has been anticipated that this could be one of the reasons why Apple’s iPhone X will be available with a very expensive price tag, which will cost $999. KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, claimed that the South Korean tech company is charging way more for each iPhone X unit.
Device’s astounding screen
The iPhone X is Apple’s first mobile device to utilize an OLED panel, but Apple had to team up with Samsung in order to be successful with the panel’s production. While the end result was iPhone X’s astounding screen, Samsung would likely earn billions of dollars and that company could keep cashing in if Apple’s 10th-year-anniversary handset is successful.
Nonetheless, by working with LG, Apple could lessen its dependence on Samsung, Apple Insider reported.
However, the iPhone X features a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED edge-to-edge display with 2436 x 1125-pixel resolution. The smartphone will arrive with a vertical 12MP rear dual camera with optical image stabilizer, while the handset’s front-facing camera features 7MP. The device will be available in different configurations: a 64GB and a 256GB.
