As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the Dallas Mavericks may want to look at some options concerning the young point-guard Dennis Smith Jr. They are currently the 13th seed in the Western Conference and could use some reinforcements. There are quite a few teams interested in a talented point-guard.

We need to mention that the player did not yet make a formal trade request, which we are certain is going to change soon. Smith has also missed his last three games due to what his team has termed "a sore back."

Problems with potential Dennis Smith Jr. trade

There are also some minor issues regarding this potential move.

First of all, we can all agree that Dennis Smith Jr. is not really a traditional point-guard. Besides his freakish athleticism, he doesn’t have much to offer with regards to his playmaking abilities or his shooting. The second problem is a pretty obvious one, they need to find a convenient deal for a 21-old player who averages 14.4 points.

Smith has been averaging 4.8 assists per game through his career, which we can agree is not great for his position. And with big names like Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker becoming free-agents, teams that are in need of a point-guard will certainly have some better options, than to take a risk of whether Smith will develop into a true point-guard.

Teams interested in Dennis Smith Jr.

With all that being said, there are still teams that are interested in a young prospect.

Orlando Magic is currently 11th seed in the Eastern Conference and could really use a player like Smith Jr., considering they don't really have a point-guard.

Their current point-guard, DJ Augustin, is good, but he is not the most attractive option in most cases. Also, Smith could really fit in in Orlando's play style.

Another option for a young point guard is the Denver Nuggets as they need defensive reinforcement. They have already significantly improved their defense as they are currently 11th in defensive efficiency.

But if they want to be title contenders, they at least need to get their defense above-average level. Also, their defense is not looking good recently as they are allowing 115.3 points per 100 possessions.

Phoenix Suns are also an option as they are also in need of a point guard and their star guard player Devin Booker needs help. They could possibly offer their 2019 first-round draft pick, which will replace the one that Maverick traded last spring to Atlanta Hawks.
