The NFL power rankings for Week 5 are out and the battle for the top spot in the NFL hasn’t changed since Week 1. The Los Angeles Rams are on some kind of roll, but so are the Kansas City Chiefs. If the NFL power rankings were a horse race, this would be the fifth straight race with a photo finish between these two!

Chiefs are No. 1

It can always be debated, and for good reason, but this week the Kansas City Chiefs have dethroned the LA Rams in my power rankings.

Once again quarterback Patrick Mahomes led his Chiefs to a victory even though he struggled for the first time this season.

CBS Sports indicates that Mahomes threw two interceptions, his first two of the season, against the Jaguars Sunday afternoon, yet the Chiefs cruised to a 30-14 win. Mahomes threw for over 300 yards, but it was the Chiefs' defense that frustrated the Jags in Week 5. Blake Bortles threw four interceptions and Jacksonville hardly resembles the team that started the season 2-0 with victories against the Giants and Patriots.

Lions roaring

How about Matt Patricia’s Detroit Lions?

This team could easily be 4-1 on the season, yet they have to be the best 2-3 team in the league. Detroit’s two wins came against Tom Brady and the Patriots and Aaron Rodgers’ Packers. Their losses came against the Cowboys on a last-second field goal and a heartbreaker against the 49ers.

The Lions trailed San Francisco 30-13 in the fourth quarter before going on a 14-0 run to cut the lead to 30-27. Then victory came for Detroit - almost. Lions fans will be the first to tell you that they had the comeback complete when DB Tracy Walker intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo and ran the ball to the Niners' seven-yard line. The INT was waived off due to a holding penalty against Quandre Diggs that was nowhere near the play.

Nevertheless, outside of the opening week loss to the NY Jets, Detroit has been outstanding. They are literally two plays from being 4-0 since Week 1, but they have to settle for reality, which is a 2-2 record since.

The teams trending upwards in Week 6 include the Lions, Steelers, Bengals, Patriots, Panthers and even those pesky Cleveland Browns.

Taking a step backward are the Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, and Dolphins. Miami’s promising 3-0 start seems like years ago as they are now 3-2 and have surrendered first place away to the surging New England Patriots.

Below is a look at the Week 6 NFL power rankings.
