England wins the first session
India began day two at 307 for the loss of six wickets, but it took England less than eight overs to bowl the visitors out for 329 runs in their first innings. Among the Indians, only Rishabh Pant (24 runs) and Ravichandran Ashwin (14 runs) got some runs in the lower order to take the score to a respectable position.
Both James Anderson and Stuart Board got two wickets each in the morning session to wrap things up quickly. The English openers, then, started well and batted through till the lunch break as their score stood at 46-0.
Pandya swings it away for India post-lunch
The post-lunch session belonged to India completely as it just took them around 30 overs to bowl out England for just 161 runs. After a solid start, England soon slipped from 54-0 to 75-3. The hosts further found themselves in deep trouble when Hardik Pandya came to bowl. He took five key wickets giving away just 28 runs in six overs, which triggered a major collapse for the English team.
The spirited bowling by the all-rounder was supported by some good slip catching from KL Rahul and Pant, who took five catches as a wicketkeeper on debut. Pandya's fiver pushed England to 128-9, at a point where they were staring at follow-on.
Jos Buttler played a quick-fire knock of 39 runs, while Anderson hanged around for a while to take England's first innings total to 161 runs, with the deficit reduced to 168 runs.
Pandya's effort was backed by other seamers too, as Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma got two wickets while Mohammad Shami managed one wicket.
India builds on the huge lead
The Indian openers got the team off to another good start as Shikhar Dhawan (44 runs) and Rahul (36 runs) put on a 60-run partnership. India's second innings lead stood at 292 runs with eight wickets in hand as Virat Kohli (8 runs not out) and Cheteshwar Pujara (33 runs not out) guided India to stumps on day two with a score of 124-2.
The aggressive play by the Indian batsmen in the second innings has assured that they are in a strong position to win the third Test.
