Knicks fans, including myself, haven't exactly been thrilled with the team's performance in the past few seasons. In fact, James Dolan's club has been downright awful. The Knicks haven't made the playoffs in the past three seasons, despite the team's effort this season to create a playoff caliber squad. General manager Phil Jackson was fired at the end of last season, after failing to create a roster that would finally get New York back into the playoffs. New York has been in turmoil for a long time, thanks to owner James Dolan, but that hasn't prevented free agents from seeking out the Knicks as a possible destination.
Kyrie Irving Wants Out of Cleveland
The shocking news that Kyrie wants out of Cleveland was released to the sports world yesterday. According to ESPN, Kyrie has more of a desire to be in the spotlight and wants to get out of the shadow of LeBron James, who seems to get all the attention. What might have been even more shocking than the news that Kyrie wasn't interested in returning to a team that has made the championship in the past three seasons was the list of teams that he wanted to be traded to. That list included the Spurs, the Heat, and ... the Knicks.
Knicks Still Attractive Destination for NBA Players
Irving's list of teams proves that the New York Knicks are still an attractive destination for Free Agents, even if they haven't been great in past seasons.
Back when Carmelo Anthony was playing for the Denver Nuggets, he knew he wanted to come to New York. And who wouldn't want to come to the city of lights? There's so much to do, and it's really tough to beat New York. Now compare that to Cleveland.
Cleveland is definitely a city in the United States, but it is nowhere close to the same level as New York.
That makes players like Kyrie Irving consider the Knicks as an attractive location, even though James Dolan owns the team which seems to be going nowhere fast. But the fact that Kyrie Irving is even considering the team is a great sign for New York Knicks fans.
Other Free Agents Have Interest in New York.
If Kyrie is interested, chances are that other players in the NBA are interested as well.
There's no place like New York City, and plenty of NBA players would love to move there and play at Madison Square Garden. If the Knicks did manage to land Irving, it's possible that they could create a big three of their own with Kristaps Porzingis, Irving, and another superstar. For now, the Knicks have to be thrilled that they are even being mentioned in these talks.
