Stephen Curry, whose real name is Wardell Stephen Curry II, was interviewed on "The "700 Club" on CBN on Friday. The NBA star talked about maintaining a disciplined focus on life in the midst of his celebrity status. Viewers got to see a side of the professional basketball player for the Golden State Warriors that they probably were not aware of before.
Besides basketball, the 29-year-old member of the National Basketball Association and a two-time MVP spoke about his family, friends, and his faith. He is often referred to as the greatest shooter in NBA history, but there is more to him than that.
Curry's background
Curry comes from a family of basketball players. His father, Dell Curry, is a former basketball player who was in the NBA from 1986 until 2002. The 52-year-old father retired from the Charlotte Hornets as an all-time leader with 9,839 points. He currently works as a sports commentator on Charlotte Hornets television broadcasts.
Steph is the older brother of NBA Seth Curry. The 26-year-old brother is also a professional basketball player who plays for the Dallas Mavericks. The brothers are three years apart in age, but they look like much alike. Steph in only one inch taller at 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 190 pounds, just five pounds more than his younger brother.
Curry wanted to attend Virginia Tech where his parents played sports for the Hokies, but the school offered him only a walk-on spot because of his slender built.
In fact, he was overlooked by larger schools because of his small size. He was recruited by Davidson College, a much smaller school, when he was in the tenth grade. He accepted that offer, and the rest is basketball history.
Charlotte Christian High School retired Curry's jersey in January of this year. However, Davidson won't retire his number until he completes his college degree, according to a college rule.
Curry left Davidson after his junior year for the NBA draft. He says he still plans to get his college degree.
Faith and Family
Steph has been married to Ayesha Alexander since June 30, 2011. They are proud parents of two daughters, five-year-old Riley and two-year-old Ryan. The family lives in Alamo, California.
Curry doesn't hide his Christian Faith.
He is known to pound his chest on the basketball court and points his index finger up as a gesture to God. Written on his trademark shoe is Philippians 4:13 that states, " I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." He has a tattoo of First Corinthians 13:8 that says "Love never fails."
While on "The 700 Club," Curry said he and some of his teammates have a 30-minute Bible Study together, and they text each other scriptures.
Stephen Curry's future
Curry is on the last year of his $44-million contract with the Warriors. He said he is happy where he is and doesn't see himself playing for any other team. Besides, Curry could make up to $207 million over the next five years with his upcoming contract with Golden State. He could make only $135 million with any other team because of a salary cap. Since everything is going well with the Warriors and the math is good, expect him to stay where he is for a long time.
