The Los Angeles Lakers seem to be serious about their rebuilding process. Magic Johnson is the new man in charge and he apparently doesn't want to waste any more time as he looks to improve the Lakers and get them closer to where they used to be.
It's been a long time since the Lakers were relevant and even the biggest Lakers fans are getting tired of their team underachieving season after season.
Led by Luke Walton as the head coach, the "Purple and Gold" finished the 2016/2017 season with a miserable 26-56 record and ended up at the bottom of the Western Conference. The Lakers will have the second pick in the upcoming draft. Maybe that's the perfect chance to turn their fortunes around.
Could Lonzo and D'Angelo coexist?
The 2017 NBA draft could be one of the most interesting draft generations and the Lakers will also have the chance to benefit from it. They will have the number 2 pick in the upcoming draft and many believe that they will draft the six-foot-six point guard from UCLA - Lonzo Ball.
If drafted, Lonzo Ball would be expected to be the face of the franchise for the years to come and basketball experts around the world believe that Lonzo is the "real deal".
The only "problem" the Lakers would have if drafting Ball is D'Angelo Russell's situation. Russell was drafted second overall in the 2015 draft, and he has three more years on his contract. D'Angelo will be a restricted free-agent in 2019 but it was reported on Monday that the Lakers are already looking to move him.
ESPN's Chad Ford reported that the Lakers are actively shopping Russell in order to get another first-round pick in the 2017. draft. This move makes sense for both the Lakers and D'Angelo since it would probably be hard for Lonzo Ball and Russell to coexist on the same team.
Both of them are ball dominant players, and while Ball is a pure point guard, Russell is more of a scorer that can play at the point guard position when needed. He finished the 2016/2017 season averaging 15.6 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 40% from the field.
D'Angelo headed to the Heat?
One of the possible destinations for Russell could be the Miami Heat. The Lakers are reportedly looking for a trade package that would include another first-round draft pick, and the Miami Heat can offer just that.
The Heat have the number 14 pick in Thursday's NBA draft, and some other pieces that could be interesting in a possible D'Angelo Russell trade.
If the Heat does decide to make this move, other than their 14th draft pick this year, they would probably have to include the likes of Tyler Johnson or maybe Justise Winslow.
Pat Riley is known for his bold and risky moves throughout his career and this would be no different. It remains to be seen what will happen before the draft night.
