On Sunday night, Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi took over the No. 1 spot on the WNBA's all-time scoring list. Taurasi had been nearing the record held by former WNBA player Tina Thompson but was just 14 points shy of the record coming into Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Sparks. Despite her team suffering a lopsided defeat on the road, Taurasi managed to score enough points to take over the all-time record.

Here's the latest on the Mercury vs. Sparks game outcome and Taurasi's WNBA record.

Sparks rout Mercury

The two teams were near one another in the WNBA standings, giving Phoenix an incentive to try to pull off a win on Sunday night. However, with the game at the Staples Center, the Los Angeles Sparks handed out a 90-59 rout of the visitors. That moved the Sparks to 8-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 at home, while Phoenix dropped to 6-5 overall and 3-2 on the road.

The reigning WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike finished with 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the way, while Candace Parker added 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

R. Williams came off the bench to contribute 15 points for the winning side. The Sparks shot 47.8 percent for the game and outscored Phoenix 38-17 in just the first quarter. L.A. would win three of the four quarters, with a 19-15 second quarter the only one that went the Mercury's way.

The Phoenix Mercury shot just 32.8 percent for the game including 19.2 percent from three-point range. Diana Taurasi had 19 points on 7-for-16 shooting which also included hitting four of the 10 three-point shots she attempted. Chelsea Little added 14 points on 50 percent field goal shooting. However, it was a quieter night for the league's leading scorer. Brittney Griner shot 4-for-9 and finished with just 11 points to go with three rebounds.

The Mercury also had a game-high 19 turnovers and were out-rebounded 40-35 for the game.

Taurasi's scoring record

With her 19 points in Sunday night's game, it put Diana Taurasi in sole possession of the all-time scoring mark for the WNBA. Taurasi eclipsed Tina Thompson's 7,488 points by six points as she now has 7,494 points for her All-Star career in the league. Once she hit the layup to surpass Thompson's total, she received plenty of applause as the Sparks' Candace Parker congratulated her on the court, and former Lakers star Kobe Bryant was shown standing up, applauding in the crowd.

Taurasi has been in the WNBA since the 2004 season when she was the No. 1 draft pick by the Phoenix Mercury.

She's stayed with the team since then, and they've captured three WNBA Championships with her help. Taurasi also married her former teammate, Penny Taylor within the past year.

She'll look to continue to add to her scoring record with the next Phoenix Mercury game. They take on the Seattle Storm on June 23rd beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern Time at Key Arena.
