West Indies 244/7

Pakistan won the toss and asked West Indies to bat first.

The Pakistani bowlers had West Indies tottering at 71 for 5. The situation could be described as a sea saw of fortunes. The hosts were reeling when Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich together managed to steady the ship for the hosts. The 118 run partnership salvaged some respect to the Caribbean total.

At stumps on day one, skipper Jason Holder and Devendra Bishoo came to the rescue and saved the situation. Both took advantage of a slight slackening of the guard by the Pakistanis and hit 55 off 68 balls.

Visitors on top in the first two sessions of the day

The visitors had the hosts under their control, but the counter attack took them completely by surprise. The visitors have taken the second new ball, and it needs to be soon how quickly they can finish off the first inning of the West Indies.

The much-needed respite came when Yasir Shah got Chase brilliantly caught by Wahab Riaz. This was soon followed by the wicket of Dowrich who was stunned by a stinger which castled his stumps. With two well-set batsmen departing, the Pakistanis had a chance on their hand which they again floundered and allowed skipper Jason Holder and Devendra Bishoo to settle down and contribute valuable 55 runs.

Chase and Dowrich 118 run partnership can be described as the jewel of the inning. Coming just after the fall of opener Kieran Powell who was caught by Younis Khan off Mohammed Amir, Chase confidently batted and reached a top score of 63 in the inning.

Wicket-keeper batsman Doowrich also made a meaty 56 and left his seniors scratching their head about what went wrong in the earlier part of the inning.

Chase is no push over and last year made a valiant century in only his second test to prevent India from winning the second test match. The only aberration in his otherwise perfect inning is his urge to hook any short-pitched delivery. However, Yasir Shah dismissed both the batsmen in the last session of the day.
