The theme for the Washington Redskins this offseason appears to be "upheaval." After reports that the team was looking at getting rid of general manager Scot McCloughan came to fruition with his firing on Thursday, the team moved forward with a number of signings that will at the very least add some defensive depth. Three free agent signings have gone down and they've all been on the defensive side of the ledger.
The good news is that the Redskins appear to be turning their attention to offense. The team is reported to have met with Terrelle Pryor and the wide receiver seems to be a need considering Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson have both departed. The big question now is who will be throwing to potential targets like Pryor in Washington.
The defensive additions for the Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins started the free agent period with the signing of two defensive linemen in Terrell McClain and Stacey McGee. While neither of those players are the kind that are going to be game changes for the Redskins, they are both considered quality defenders.
The Washington Post talked to one NFL scout who broke down the players by saying, "“McGee is a stingy interior player that can hold the line of scrimmage, but he’s very average as a pass rusher. McClain is athletic, plays with a motor and can play the interior as well as on the perimeter.”
One other addition for the 'Skins was former Arizona Cardinals safety DJ Swearinger. Swearinger is considered a hard hitter who can play out of control at times, but he's coming off his career best season in 2016.
The offensive problems for the Redskins
It's good the team is upgrading the defense, because it might not be getting a lot of help on the offensive side of the ball. In addition to the departures of Garcon and Jackson, quarterback Kirk Cousins reportedly told the team he wanted a trade.
The Washington Redskins apparently told him he wouldn't be going anywhere, but it's never good when your star player no longer wants to be your player at all. It's possible before long, we might really have to see Colt McCoy under center in the nation's capital.
