Welcome to another edition of NFL: what does every team need! This edition, we are going to look at the teams in the Afc South. The AFC South has one of the worst divisions in football, with their division going 29-35 combined last season. This Division includes the Texans, Titans, Colts, and Jaguars. These teams all need something, so let's get into to what exactly each team in the AFC South needs in free agency or the draft.
Houston Texans
The Houston Texans were 9-7 last year, and they managed to squeeze into the playoffs. Their offense wasn't all that great due to the bad play of Brock Osweiler. But even though there's a problem at QB, that's not where the Texans should look to in the offseason. The Texans need a ligament tight end this offseason. The Texans need a tight end with more of a vertical threat to help out Osweiler.
A QB's best friend is his tight end, and having a dominate tight end could help Deandre Hopkins get back on his feet as well. The Texans were ranked 29th in pass YPG with under 200 yards per game.
You could blame Osweiler, but you need receivers and tight ends that can make a play when needed. There are a lot of tight ends in the draft so expect Houston to get one there.
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans were clearly the best team in the AFC South. If it wasn't for an injury to Marcus Mariota, they would've won the division. With a strong core, the Titans are looking up. But they need to work on that secondary if they want to move up in the NFL. The Titans were abysmal in the passing game, ranking 30th in pass yards allowed per game. The have a decent corner in Jason McCourty, but nowadays in the NFL you need two corners, and that is something they don't have. They have draft picks at their disposal, so look at them to get some depth at the corner there.
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts are coming off of another 8-8 year. They have much better talent than a .500 team, but they couldn't stay healthy or have young talent last season. The fired GM Ryan Grigson, so they are looking to have better days acquiring talent. What the Colts need is an inside linebacker. The Colts haven't had a solid linebacker since the Gary Brackett days, and that was a while ago. With them releasing D'Qwell Jackson they will need to look into that position Their rush defense was awful, giving up 120 YPG ranking them 25th.
They also need outside backers too. With the retirement of Robert Mathis and the impending free agency of Erik Walden, they need to bulk up in this position too.
They should look to the draft, as it is full of OLB talent. The Colts defense couldn't stop a nosebleed last year, so they need to start in the middle with linebackers.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars were bad last season. They ended up 3-13, and they fired their coach Gus Bradley. They struggled at the quarterback position with Blake Bortles. Not to be a bearer of bad news, but they need to look for a QB. The Jags were ranked 20th in pass YPG with 233 per game. Bortles failed to improve, only throwing 21 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. His completion percentage was under 60 percent which isn't getting the job done. Tom Coughlin didn't commit to Bortles for next season so that they might be looking elsewhere for a QB.
The draft is full of them, and there might be good free agent QBs on the market, so I think the Jags should can the Bortles project and move in a different direction.
The AFC South was a terrible division last year and don't expect anything different. These teams need more than the pieces I listed here, so it will take a few years. Like I always say, every team needs something, so stay tuned for the next division in NFL: what every team needs!
