The Summer Olympics 2016 are coming to you this year from Rio, Brazil. If you're thinking of seeing the Olympics one day, or visiting Brazil in general, then this will be the perfect time for you to do both. The best news is -- the visa requirement is being waived. You will be able to enter and leave Brazil freely without all the steps that one would otherwise have to go through.
One might ask -- How and why is this happening?
The President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, recently signed a bill that will waive the visa requirement for 90 days, as per The Rio Times and Fox Sports.
This will apply to all foreigners who would normally need to apply for and pay for a visa prior to entering the country of Brazil. The United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan are only a few named of which this will benefit. There is an entire list of more countries who will be able to enter under this waiver. The exception, however, would be to those countries which are a national security threat.
Normally, a visa would cost $160 for a citizen from the United States. Brazil has a visa program due to reciprocity -- the citizens of Brazil need to pay for visas wherever they Travel. The 90 day waiver will be in effect when one enters Brazil on June 1st, 2016 until September 18th, 2016. Entrance will be free and one can stay up to90 days from the time one enters the country. An additional part of good news is that Brazil’s currency has devalued.
In the past few months, the Brazilian real has lost an estimated 70% of its value as per Bloomberg Business.
If one is to visit Brazil, the prices of hotels might be higher due to the Olympics, but spending will be low.Tourism is much needed for Brazil at the moment.
