The latest updates and spoilers for "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" reveal new details about the film's first teaser trailer. 20th Century Fox streamed the first trailer during "The Late Late Show with James Corden" after it was rumored to premiere next week. The trailer sees Charles Xavier and the X-Men fighting their own teammate, Jean Grey after a malevolent force triggered a dark side to her personality and unleashed her dangerous potential.
The trailer also teased the possible death of a major character and Magneto forms a new Brotherhood of Mutants team with former teammates Beast, Storm, and Nightcrawler.
Mystique's demise teased in Dark Phoenix trailer
The "Dark Phoenix" teaser trailer starts with Professor Charles Xavier taking a young Jean Grey to his school and help control her powers after she accidentally killed her parents in a car accident. Charles quickly found out how powerful Jean is and her potential could lead to infinite possibilities. However, her abilities could also be a potential threat if not nurtured properly, so he made some "precautions" to her mind to keep her in check.
The video also sees the X-Men as national heroes and took on missions that are too risky even for them. They went to outer space for a rescue mission, but it did go smoothly after Jean was struck by a cosmic force and it unleashed her true potential.
Charles and the team tried to help Jean, but her new "personality" lead her to create destruction everywhere and it also leads to the death of a major character in the film. While the identity of that character is not shown in the funeral scene, DigitalSpy speculated that it could be Jennifer Lawrence's character Raven Darkholme (Mystique) who takes the fall, seeing that Charles, Beast, and the rest of the young X-Men are alive in the trailer.
Mystique had a major role in the prequel films, becoming a founding member of the team and prevented the fall of humanity in "Days of Future Past" film. She also helped Charles and Beast train the team and became its field leader at the end of "Apocalypse."
The Brotherhood returns
According to IGN, Magneto forms a new Brotherhood of Mutants team in "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" and their sole purpose is to stop Jean and her growing powers by any means necessary.
The team consists of himself, Beast, Storm, Nightcrawler, and two new mutant characters Red Lotus and Selene.
In the comics, Selene has the ability to drain the life force of everyone giving her immortality. Red Lotus is mutant heir to the Triad and his enhanced strength, speed, and agility make him a very dangerous martial artist.
Magneto also founded Genosha in the film as a safe haven for mutant-kind and sees himself as a messiah to them. He also helps Jean understand her condition, but he is unable to do so as he condemns her as being "evil." Charles and Cyclops will try to stop the Brotherhood from killing Jean, which will create more drama and rift between them.
"X-Men: Dark Phoenix" will premiere in cinemas on Feb. 14, 2019.
