The online streaming network Netflix has confirmed that their hit original series "Santa Clarita Diet" will return for a third season which is set to go into production later this year. The news of the third season comes less than two months after the show's 10-episode second season which was released in its entirety on Netflix this past March. The first season of the dark comedy, which was premiered in 2017, quickly generated quite the fanbase as viewers took a liking to the new refreshing take on the typical zombie genre.

The show will return for an additional 10 more episodes

"Santa Clarita Diet" follows the story of an American suburban family who goes through quite the drama as realtor, wife, and mother Shelia - who is portrayed by Drew Barrymore - starts experiencing a craving for, well, human flesh. Whilst this is undoubtedly a spell for disaster, the show is focused on the young family coming together to try and work through the curveball that's been thrown at them. With dark humourous tones and a variety of witty, interesting characters, audience members will be happy to know that the storyline has yet to develop through at least one more future season.

Showrunners have already started working on season 3

In an April interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Victor Fresco released that they've already started developing and writing the story for the show's third season. In the interview itself, he explained how "there's always more story" which gives fans the idea that there's a lot more to come.

Whilst Netflix doesn't release the viewing ratings of its programs, both of the previous seasons have received an average rating of 78%, according to RottenTomatoes. If this is anything to go by, we can assume that the third upcoming season will receive a warm welcoming from fans of the zombie comedy far and wide. Netflix has recently also been revealed to be cutting down on its line-up of original series, which is further confirmed as the network has confirmed it's hit comedy "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" will be ending after it's fourth season.

Season 3 will be released on Netflix early next year

In typical fashion of the streaming network, we can expect to see the third season of the show go into production later this year to be released in its entirety early 2019. Apart from knowing that the showrunners have already started working on the storyline of the forthcoming episodes, we haven't been provided with any further details as to what to expect. We do know, however, that we will be seeing the return of the full cast - including stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant.

We're going to have to sit tight and wait for more information to be revealed later this year, but at least we have time to binge-watch the previous two seasons in preparation for any upcoming news.

Season 1 and 2 of "Santa Clarita Diet" are currently available to watch on Netflix, so grab your popcorn and settle in.
