On Sunday, royal fans eagerly tuned on to Lifetime Channel as it premiered "A Royal Romance," the movie based on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's love story. It was full of cheesy moments and swoon-worthy scenes, just as fans expected of a Lifetime chick flick.
However, one staggering surprise was how the movie depicted Kate Middleton as arrogant and mean. It is interesting to note that the movie was not officially authorized by the Queen and Lifetime has been known for taking creative liberties when making biopics.
Still, fans criticized the network for taking things too far this time.
Was Kate Middleton really against Prince Harry's relationship?
Starring Parisa Fitz-Henley as Meghan Markle and Murray Fraser as Prince Harry, "Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance" narrates the story of the soon-to-be-married royal couple. The story begins from their childhood to the time they fell in love. Other members of the Royal Family were also featured, including Prince William and Kate Middleton.
Interestingly, the movie's version of Kate Middleton (played by Laura Mitchell) seemed to be totally antagonistic towards Meghan Markle from the start.
When the Duchess of Cambridge learned that her brother-in-law was dating an American girl, she immediately made a xenophobic comment: "Oh no, they're so loud.
Later, Kate talked to Prince Harry and warned him about the challenges they're going to face as a couple. Although she herself was a commoner, this Kate Middleton was obviously bothered by Meghan's past, nationality, and even race.
"She’s divorced, she’s American, she’s half-black….are you ready for this?" the movie's Kate Middleton uttered.
Royal fans have slammed the Lifetime movie, saying that this couldn't be farther from the truth. Many couldn't believe that the Duchess of Cambridge was this snobbish and awful in real life. Not to mention, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have been seen together in several public outings enjoying each other's company.
Other inaccuracies
While the actors had uncanny resemblances with their royal characters, there were many scenes that probably didn't happen in real life. For example, there was a scene when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were vacationing in Botswana. It is true that place is hugely significant for Prince Harry, but what's not so believable is the scene where the couple was almost attacked by a wild lion during their romantic trip.
Also, Meghan Markle was portrayed to have broken up with Prince Harry--twice. The first time was via FaceTime, while her second attempt was needed to make the movie more dramatic. The American actress realized that she couldn't live without her prince, and she ran to try to catch Prince Harry's plane as he was leaving.
Somehow, she miraculously was able to stop the royal jet from taking off and the two of them reunited with much passion. The royal family has not confirmed if these incidents did take place. The Palace has also not commented on the movie's accuracy.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will get married this coming Saturday, May 19, at St. George's Chapel in Windsor. Have you seen Lifetime's "Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance"? What did you think of the movie's depiction of the royal family? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
