The latest updates for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" animated movie reveal possible classic Spider-Man villains and a new cast member who will voice Peter Parker in the film. Sony attended this year's CinemaCon event to promote their upcoming film projects and showed new footage from the "Spidey" movie.

Similar to the "Venom" live-action movie, "Into the Spider-Verse" is Sony's way of expanding the "Spider-Man" film franchise as they are creating spin-off projects based on the characters associated with the web-slinger such as Eddie Brock, Nightwatch, Black Cat, and Silver Sable.

Furthermore, the animated movie is focused on a different hero, Miles Morales rather than Peter Parker.

The new Peter Parker

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced during CinemaCon that "New Girl" star Jake Johnson has been cast to voice Peter Parker in the "Spidey" animated movie. While Miles Morales is the main protagonist in the movie, Peter will be an important piece in the latter's growth as a hero.

In the Ultimate Marvel comics, Miles Morales is bitten by a different genetically engineered spider that gave him his powers. Miles was afraid and hesitant to use his powers but soon changed his mind after witnessing his world's Peter Parker heroic sacrifice to stop the Green Goblin. The latter felt guilty for not helping Spidey during the fight so that he could live.

Miles then used a make-shift costume to continue Parker's legacy and save the world as its new friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man. The film will likely take cues from the comics but with its own twist as Miles will meet another Peter in the story. While it is unknown which Peter is this from another universe, comic book fans speculated that this version is from the main Marvel Universe.

For now, Tom Holland plays the web-slinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he will feature in "Avengers: Infinity War."

Villains revealed

Sony revealed that the animated movie would feature several classic villains from the Marvel Universe. The first teaser featured Miles chasing after the Prowler, but the CinemaCon footage revealed that the latter would also face Kingpin and Green Goblin.

Green Goblin and Kingpin are two of Spidey's most dangerous foes. Kingpin controls the criminal underworld of New York City and uses his vast wealth and influence to manipulate the system from the shadows. Green Goblin, on the other hand, is obsessed with destroying the web-head's life going so far as to target his loved ones.
