On Saturday night, the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner took place. After Donald Trump decided to skip the event for the second year in a row, the president's son spoke out in his defense on social media.

The White House Correspondents' Dinner took place this past Saturday night, and in a repeat of last year, Donald Trump was not in attendance.

The president's ongoing war of words with the media has been well-documented for the better part of the last three years, so in an attempt to avoid hearing hours worth of humorous criticism, the former host of "The Apprentice" opted to hold a campaign-style rally for himself instead. Despite Trump's absence, he and his administration still came under fire, with WHCD host comedian Michelle Wolf ripping into Trump and others like Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Wolf poked fun at Trump's questionable financial history, as well as the allegations of sexual misconduct.

When the event was over, the right-wing media reacted with negativity, demanding Michelle Wolf apologize, especially over her harsh jokes about White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

In addition, Donald Trump Jr. gave his thoughts during a tweet on April 29. "Hearing all the 'jokes' about Donald Trump as a business man from last night's WH Correspondents Dinner," Don Jr. tweeted out. "Only problem is they forgot about his best deal ever... Living rent free for 2 years in the media’s heads," the president's son tweeted in an attempt at humor.

Twitter reacts

As Donald Trump Jr. did his best to come to the aid of his father, critics on social media were not having any of it. "Hey Don, let's talk about the Russian spy. What did you and the Russian spy talk about? Did you try and bang her, I wouldn't blame you if you did, she isn't bad looking," one tweet read.

"You know where else you and him will live rent free for a long time??

Federal prison," a Twitter user wrote. "He bankrupted 6 businesses and had many others fail. He’s not respected amongst actual businessmen and entrepreneurs. He can’t even get credit from American banks which is why he borrows from the Russian mob," another tweet stated.

"Pretty soon, I imagine you'll be living somewhere rent-free as well.

Somewhere where people wear a lot of orange," a social media user wrote. "They get paid to think about him. Aren't you supposed to be the smart one? I mean, not smart enough to not have an affair, but at least smarter than your dad and brother?" a follow-up tweet read.
