Netflix recruits a group of 30 people to watch films and multiple episodes of Television Shows on its platform to tag the content with different metadata. A “Netflix tagger” was recently profiled by Fast Company. She described how her company binge-watches and develops eloquent tags for content sorting in the service's recommendation algorithm.
Who can become a Netflix tagger?
If you have ever wished to get paid to marathon-view films and television shows, Netflix might actually be able to hire you to just tag their videos.
Recently, Fast Company posted up a job for a professional “Netflix tagger.” It described how the entertainment streaming company is currently looking for 30 people whose sole job is to watch the content streaming on Netflix, and tag films and television shows with metadata and category information.
The profiled tagger, Sherrie Gulmahamad, deliberated how her team approaches the Netflix content and often uses oddly precise category tags.
These tags are used by the service in its recommendation algorithm to sort content and define labels for the watcher’s discovery. Gulmahamad further said, “There are a number of storylines and an extensive palette of tones to seize the essence of the content. We can be more journalistic when it comes to the sorting of these tags. For example, various television shows and films on the platform can be tagged under the “supernatural content” if it includes evil kids, demons, angels, mutants, Bigfoot, magical creatures, cannibals, witches, zombies, dragons, and even mad scientists."
According to Business Insider, Gulmahamad perceives the job as similar to being “a librarian” with a “wide underlying set of facts of how movies and television shows are related,” where you devote up to 20 hours per week binge-watching Netflix content.
