Jude Law will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming “Captain Marvel” movie. He is currently in negotiations to play opposite Brie Larson, who will be playing the titular character. Larson won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “Room,” and Law won for Best Actor in 2004, for “Cold Mountain” and for Best Supporting Actor in 2000 for his role in “The Talented Mr.
Ripley. Samuel L. Jackson, who also stars in the film, was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Pulp Fiction."
A Marvel-ous line up
Ben Mendelsohn, from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will play the villian, and Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury. Law will play Dr. Walter Lawson, a mentor to Larson's character. In the comics, Law's character, also called Mar-Vell, was the original Captain Marvel.
The film will be set in the 1990's. It is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who also directed “Half Nelson.” The current draft of the script was written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, with earlier drafts written by “Inside Out” scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman, who wrote “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The story follows Carol Danvers (Larson), who is an Air Force pilot who has an accident, culminating in her DNA being fused with that of an alien, giving her the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight.
Law's big movies
Law is no stranger to big movies. Earlier this year, he was cast as a young Albus Dumbledore for “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and he is also set to reprise his role as Watson in the next “Sherlock Holmes” movie with Robert Downey, Jr. His next film is the spy thriller “The Rhythm Section,” in which he stars opposite Blake Lively. Earlier this year, he starred as Votigern in "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword," which was directed by Guy Ritchie, and also starred Eric Bana, Marvel's former Hulk.
