2017 will go down as the year of shocking celebrity splits. The most recent couple to announce their break up is singer, Jennifer Hudson, and her longtime fiancé, David Otunga. By all appearances, the couple seemed in love and dedicated to being good parents to their son. However, Hudson’s request for a Protective Order against Otunga paints couple’s relationship in a different light.
The couple's history
Jennifer Hudson rose to fame in 2004 when she competed in the third season of the American Idol. The singer won over audiences with her vocals.
But despite her popularity, the singer was eliminated halfway through the competition.
Hudson’s elimination from the show didn’t derail her Hollywood career, however. Shortly after American Idol, she was cast in the movie, Dreamgirls, alongside Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy. Jennifer’s performance in the movie was a hit with critics and audiences alike. She won a slew of awards, including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Following the success of Dreamgirls, Hudson’s acting career continued with roles in Sex and the City along with The Secret Life of Bees. But her musical aspirations remained her central focus. In 2008, she released her long-awaited debut album, which would earn her a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
Meanwhile, Harvard Law graduate, David Otunga, decided to leave his career as an attorney to focus on training as a wrestler. His career took off when he signed on with WWE, where he debuted in the popular Nexus stable. Throughout the course of his wrestling career, he would win the tag team championships twice and be featured in a high-profile feud with John Cena.
In 2007, Hudson and Otunga would cross paths, leading them to become a couple. A few months after they started dating, the couple became engaged. A year later in August 2009, the two welcomed their first child, a son named David Jr.
Their split
Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga seemed like a great couple. Otunga proved to be a huge support to Hudson as she grieved the deaths of her mother, brother, and nephew.
Hudson even thanked her fiancé for helping her through the difficult time.
That’s why the announcement of their split came as a shock to many. Yet, rumors swirled that a break up between the two had been in the works for months. But things won’t be amicable for the couple.
According to a protective order filed by Hudson, she alleges that Otunga had a tendency to get violent with her. However, Otunga quickly denied the claims and is seeking primary custody of their son. With the abuse allegations and a custody battle in the works, it seems like things are going to turn ugly. As parents, let’s hope Hudson and Otunga can work things out peacefully for the sake of their son.
