In less than two months, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will hit the theaters. The people behind the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy are now working on the next movie installment, “Star Wars: Episode 9.”

In fact, in an interview with BBC Radio 4, the film’s new director J.J. Abrams, who also handled “The Force Awakens,” revealed that he is now preparing to do the trilogy’s last chapter.

As he wants his approach to stick to its original theme, he also wants to add new concepts that will be fresh in the eyes of the fans.

A new twist

J.J. Abrams revealed that “Star Wars: Episode 9” should have the same excitement as the original trilogy has.

“At the same time, we have to take them places that they haven't gone,” he said. “The Force Awakens” director was also with composer Michael Giacchino when he did the interview, and he said that doing the movie with him is a “strange thing.”

Giacchino has worked on “Planet of the Apes,” “Star Trek,” and “Star Wars,” and for him, this is a dream job.

But, they can’t just simply offer the same thing over and over again as they have to do something new.

Working on the last movie installment

In September, Lucasfilm announced that J.J. Abrams would be directing “Star Wars: Episode 9” after its original director, Colin Trevorrow, exited.

After handling the first movie installment, “The Force Awakens,” he is now set to finish the sequel trilogy as its writer and director. He will be working with Chris Terrio, who worked on “Batman v Superman” and “Argo,” along with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, the film company Bad Robot, and, of course, Lucasfilm.

To give Abrams the proper time to work on the third movie, its release date has been pushed back to December 20, 2019.

Originally, “Episode 9” should have focused on General Leia Organa’s (the late Carrie Fisher) story. However, with her unexpected death, things are about to change.

Johnson on Abrams’ take in the new movie

Meanwhile, “Star War: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson revealed that he will not be involved in the making of “Star Wars: Episode 9.”

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, he said that he won’t be a part of the movie’s planning. He explained that J.J. Abrams is the one who will be handling the sequel trilogy’s last installment, and he has nothing to do with that.

“I’m not involved in it,” he confirmed. He also added that Abrams will be writing his own narrative for the movie, although he is going to continue where “Episode 8” left off.
