Much to the chagrin of fans, “Rick and Morty” aired the final episode of season three last night. Season three, episode ten, “The Rickchurian Mortydate,” had a more succinct ending than its season two predecessor, but for the first time, Rick admits defeat.
The submission of Rick Sanchez
“The Rickchurian Mortydate” features Rick engaging the United States President in a petty contest, one consistently trying to out-do the other for a majority of the episode.
Rick wins when the President submits after an all-out battle between the two.
However, while Rick won his contest with the President, he failed to acknowledge the needs of his family, leading Beth to have a mental breakdown when Rick fails to explain to her that she is not a clone of the real Beth, a plot point carried over from season three, episode nine.
In the season two finale of "Rick and Morty," the galactic government throws Rick in jail and all hope seems lost; but this is Rick Sanchez. He didn’t lose in any sense of the word – in the season three premier, he uses his status as a martyr in the family to remove Jerry from their lives and become the patriarch of the household after breaking out of galactic prison.
“The Rickchurian Mortydate” featured a much different ending. Jerry is back, the family tries to abandon Rick, and Rick creates an alternate persona just to become a part of their universe again after the U.S. President excommunicated him from the country after their contest.
Rick Sanchez does not compromise. He creates, changes, destroys and does whatever he thinks is necessary. But in "The Rickchurian Mortydate," he submits. Rick gives up his contest with the President and goes out of his way to stay in this universe by swallowing his pride and pretending to be a different Rick to gain access to the family.
The final scene
After the conclusion of the “Rick and Morty” season three finale, the final scene at the end of the credits featuring Mr. Poopy Butthole, a character from season two, had a message for the fans.
At the end of “Rick and Morty” season two, Mr. Poopy Butthole was also in the final scene, telling the audience that he was making a good recovery since Beth tried to kill him, and that the new season of “Rick and Morty” would be coming out in a year to a year and a half. He was right.
In “The Rickchurian Mortydate,” Mr. Poopy Butthole tells the audience that the next season of “Rick and Morty” would be coming out in a very long time. He failed to mention any real time frame for the next season, but based on the wait between season two and season three, fans could be in for a long wait for season four.
All in all, “The Rickchurian Mortydate” was a great ending to “Rick and Morty” season three.
They reset the characters’ hierarchy to a setting more similar to season one, except Beth has reconciled with her feelings for Rick and the family is more aware of his antics. In true sitcom fashion, everything is back to the way it was, and hopefully “Rick and Morty” season four comes out in a reasonable amount of time.
