Fan or not, everyone anticipates the release of a new "Fast & Furious" movie every few years. The franchise began its success with "The Fast and the Furious" in 2001 and has not slowed down since. The most recent installment, "The Fate of the Furious", grossed over $1 billion in the box office according to CinemaBlend. The last two films had set dates of 2019 and 2021 respectively, which means that a delay in the ninth installment will most likely affect the release of the tenth's as well.

Unknown cause for delay

Last year, star of the franchise vin diesel announced the release dates of the 8th, 9th, and 10th films on his Instagram page.

The 10th and final film's release in 2021 is part of a planned goal to have 10 films released in 2 decades. With Universal's latest announcement giving the next film a new date of April 10, 2020, this could change.

The company provided no reason for the delay, but some people have their suspicions. A spin-off of the franchise starring the characters of Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham (who both entered the franchise quite late) was recently announced.

It looks like Universal has set their priorities on a fresh start, as the film's release is set for July 2019. It is unconfirmed that this is what delayed the 9th "Fast & Furious" movie, but it seems like the only logical explanation.

Vin Diesel tries to explain

Vin Diesel took to Instagram on Sunday to talk about the delay with fans. He explained that it would be "unfair" to put the blame on anyone in particular. "As we plot the course to expand the "Fast & Furious" universe, one must be mindful to take stock of the roads we took to get here," he posted.

"The pillars of authenticity, family and most importantly, our loyal fan's perspective has been instrumental in procuring success."

In addition to this, Diesel says that the franchise is so old that it's clearly in need of some "maintenance". He follows this by announcing that he has some exciting news to share regarding "Fast & Furious" and tells fans to stay tuned.

Gibson is not happy

While Vin Diesel seems excited about the news of a spin-off, "Fast & Furious" star Tyrese Gibson does not approve. He took to Instagram to call out Dwayne Johnson for making the franchise about himself. In another post with a picture of the original cast, Gibson says Johnson broke up the "fast family". He reveals that many others had been offered a spin-off in the past but chose to turn it down.

With all of this tension, the filming of the 9th installment should be very interesting. The news Vin Diesel will soon share could hopefully bring the "fast family" back together for an easier filming process.
