Fame comes with a hefty price for Ed Sheeran, who found himself sinking from the height of his success. During his appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday, the "Shape Of You" crooner revealed why he took some time off from social media amid preparation for his new music.

Following the success of his albums "Plus" and "Multiply," the singer-songwriter admitted he struggled to adjust to his newfound fame that he found himself turning to alcohol to cope up with his packed schedule. He also opened up about his struggle with Substance Abuse and how it forced him to take a breather from the online world.

Ed Sheeran shares struggle with substance abuse

"I focused on work, and I can't work under the influence," he explained. "I can't write songs under the influence. I can't perform under the influence. So, the more I worked, the less [that happened]."

The singer said he did not want to lose what he has established; hence, he decided to take a year off from the limelight while preparing for his latest album, "Divide," released in March. Ed Sheeran also admitted he did not realize he had a problem until it was brought to his attention.

The "Castle on the Hill" artist also thanked his girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, for helping him overcome his struggle with substance abuse. He said living with her has helped him remain grounded amid his hectic schedule.

This is not the first time Ed Sheeran has opened up about his drinking habits to the public. In an interview for a Rolling Stone cover story, the singer-songwriter explained that he enjoys going out and drinking with his friends until he was warned about his lifestyle.

'Divide' shows canceled after bicycle accident

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old artist recently announced the cancellation of his "Divide" tour in several cities following a bicycle accident.

Ed Sheeran, who was supposed to be back on the road after a month-long break, will have to skip his performance in Taipei, Osaka, Seoul, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.

He also asked his fans to stay tuned for further announcements about his upcoming tour dates in Manila, Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Mumbai, and Dubai, depending on how his healing progresses.

But despite his injuries, the "Thinking Out Loud" crooner still made it to the 2017 Q Awards in London, wherein he was recognized as the Best Act in the World Today.

Ed Sheeran has been on the road since his "Divide" tour kicked off in Italy last March. He is expected to wrap up the concert series in Atlanta on November 10, 2018.
