Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi have called off their engagement and ended their relationship, according to an official announcement on Friday, August 25, 2017. Viall was on Season 21 of ABC's "The Bachelor" from January 2 to March 13, 2017. The 36-year-old software sales executive proposed to Vanessa Grimaldi, a 29-year-old special education and Italian teacher in Montreal, Canada during the finale that aired last March.

It would seem like the couple stayed together for only five months, but it was much longer because they really got engaged last November but were forced to keep the engagement a secret until ABC aired the finale.

Fans of "The Bachelor" are not surprised that the couple is splitting. They are surprised that the engagement lasted as long as it did.

Announcement

Viall and Grimaldi issued a joint statement. They indicated that they are heartbroken to end their engagement. They related that they gave their relationship everything they could, and they are saddened not to get the fairytale ending they had hoped for. They promised that they would still be there for each other even though they are ending the relationship.

The main reason for the breakup is that Grimaldi has a job in Montreal and she didn't want to give it up. She loves teaching special education. During the finale, she admitted to the show's host Chris Harrison and to the viewers that they had a lot to work out.

Their different goals and lifestyles also contributed to the breakup.

Track record of 'The Bachelor'

Viall and Grimaldi's split isn't anything new for "The Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" franchises in a combined 34 seasons. The reality shows do not have a good track record. Since Season 1 of "The Bachelor" aired from March 25 to April 25, 2002, there have been 13 proposals and eight seasons where there was no proposal.

Out of those proposals, only two couples are still together today.

Before Nick and Vanessa's split, Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell announced their breakup on May 15, 2017. They were on Season 20 that aired from January 4 to March 14, 2016. They became engaged during the finale and had a reality show together.

In Season 17 that aired from January 7 through March 11, 2013, Sean Lowe, 33, proposed to Catherine Giudici, 31.

They were married on January 26, 2014, and welcomed their first child, Samuel, on July 2, 2016.

In Season 13 that aired from January 5 through March 2, 2009, Jason Mesnick, 41, proposed to Melissa Rycroft, 34, but during the finale, Mesnick broke it off with Rycroft and resumed a relationship with runner-up Molly Malaney. Mesnick and Malaney were married on February 27, 2010, and the wedding was aired on national television on March 8, 2010. They welcomed a daughter, Riley, on March 14, 2013. Rycroft moved on with her life without Mesnick and married her former boyfriend, Tye Strickland. They have three children -- a daughter Ava and sons Beckett and Cayson.
