The premier episode of "Star Trek Discovery" is scheduled to air September 25, 2017, at CBS and fans of both the movies and tv series, are surely wondering what this new show has to offer that is different from the rest.
The last tv series of this space franchise was "Enterprise," which aired for four seasons on UPN, ending its tv run in May of 2005. In November of 2015, Discovery was announced and after several delays in its original launching date, this new Star Trek series is all set to warp, once again, into the tv universe.
Discovery centers on its first officer
One detail, which instantly sets apart "Star Trek: Discovery" from the previous ones, is that its lead character is not the Captain but the ship’s First Officer, Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, from the tv hit "The Walking Dead."
"Discovery" is set about 10 years before the original 1960’s series and will have references to that show. In an interview by USA Today, Martin-Green said that the series will adapt the same vision from the original series of achieving a peaceful society however, there will be conflict and war, both inner and external.
Connection to Spock
In "Star Trek: Discovery," First Officer Michael Burnham is “almost a foster or adopted daughter” of Ambassador Sarek (father of Spock), according to executive producer, Aaron Herberts. He added that this Vulcan connection will make her take decisions that will have great consequences throughout the entire series.
The producers however did not say if Burnham is Spock’s adopted sister leaving that detail for the fans to find out in the show.
The Walking Dead factor
In an interview by Entertainment Tonight, Martin-Green said that she considered her time on "The Walking Dead" as her “sort of postgraduate degree.” She added that she learned so much about being on a show that has such a massive reach.
One major difference between "TWD" and "Star Trek" as pointed out by Martin-Green is the fans. They are in another level in the "Star Trek" franchise. She said that the fandom has expanded even beyond what she saw on TWD.
More emotional and personal "Star Trek"
Meanwhile, Jason Isaacs, who plays Captain Gabriel Lorca of U.S.S Discovery, describe to Entertainment Weekly that the current series is very different because “there’s a lot more emotional and personal interaction than plot.” Isaacs added that There’s a layered story in this series that avid viewers aren’t used to.
