Many fans of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” have been shipping a Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen romance since photos of a possible alliance were first leaked last year. However, loyal fans of the R+L=J theory have been against the potential pairing because Jon is basically Dany’s nephew. Fortunately or unfortunately for the two characters, it seems that #Jonaerys is inevitable, according to George RR Martin himself.

Straight from the author’s mouth

In an interview for “Game of Thrones’” Inside the Episode, director Alan Taylor said that nobody should be surprised that Jon and Daenerys seem to be developing feelings for each other. Taylor, who directed Season 7’s penultimate episode “Beyond the Wall,” said that when he first spoke to George RR Martin at the beginning of the show, he already alluded to a romantic connection between the two major characters, Elle reported.

According to Taylor, Martin told them that Jon and Daenerys were the main points of the show so the covergence of the two characters is an essential part of the series.

He said that the scene where Jon and Daenerys came to an understanding was a major step forward in their relationship since it showed Jon falling for Dany poitically and emotionally, Bustle reported.

A baby born of Ice and Fire

Sharp fans have noted that there were several references to children in the last episode of “Game of Thrones.” Beyond the Wall, Jon Snow tried to return Longclaw to Ser Jorah Mormont since it belonged to the Mormont family. Ser Jorah refused and said that the weapon should stay with Jon and serve him and his children well.

In Dragonstone, Tyrion tried to broach the topic of succession to Daenerys and opened up the topic of not being able to bear any children. The issue was once again raised when Dany tells Jon that since she cannot bear children, she considers her dragons Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion her offspring.

Fans believe that the statements about children could mark a foreshadowing that Jon and Daenerys will have an intimate relationship and their child will be the culmination of George RR Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” saga. If this happens, the baby will be born with both Targaryen (fire) and Stark (ice) blood, a Bustle report indicated.

What about R+L=J?

It seems that at this point, the series is headed straight into R+L=J territory which posits that Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. It was revealed last season that Jon is actually Lyanna’s son. The entry from High Septon Maynard’s diary also supports the theory by revealing that Rhaegar annulled his marriage to Elia Martel to be with Lyanna.

What remains to be seen is how Jon and Dany’s potential romance will be affected by news that they are blood-related. While it is true that the Lannisters have been engaged in incest for the past seven seasons, the characters of the Mother of Dragons and the King of the North have never shown an inclination toward doing the same. Not yet, anyway.
