Game of Thrones” Season 7 Episode 4 “The Spoils of War” may have leaked before its air date but even with a head start, many fans of the show still can’t get over the eventful episode. While some rave over the epic “loot train attack,” there were those who were more focused on the possible romantic tension between the King of the North Jon Snow, and the Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen.

Another round of incest?

Long time fans of “Game of Thrones” and its book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” would be familiar with the R+L=J theory which posits that Jon Snow is not Ned Stark’s bastard.

Instead, he is believed to be the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.

This was basically confirmed in the Tower of Joy scene in “Game of Thrones” Season 6 finale which showed Lyanna entrusting her baby to Ned and whispering something in his ear. If the series pushes through with the R+L=J theory, this would mean that Jon is actually Daenerys’ nephew because Rhaegar is her older brother.

While it is a controversial topic, incest is not uncommon for the show. Since its first episode, the incestuous relationship between Lannister twins Cersei and Jamie has been one of the running plot points of the show. However, having an incestuous relationship between Jon and Daenerys, two of the characters believed to be the reincarnation of the legendary warrior Azor Ahai, may be a stretch for even the most loyal viewers of the show.

A report by Refinery 29 focused on some reactions that viewers had about the possibility of a #Jonaerys romance after the cave scene where Jon and Daenerys seemed to be developing a more intimate relationship and understanding of each other. Many fans were opposed to pursuing the romance given the blood relationship but there were those who were swayed by the chemistry of actors Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke.

"The writers of Game of Thrones keep trying to make Dany and Jon happen. Stop trying to make that happen," another fan said.

Some fans chose to find humor in the situation instead and accused Jon of drawing the paintings on the cave walls to trick Dany into an alliance.

An undeniable attraction

In the Inside, the Episode clip, series creator David Benioff acknowledged that “Game of Thrones” may be headed towards building a romantic relationship between the two characters.

“There’s conflict. And it’s the conflict between powerful people and then to make it even more complicated, they’re starting to be attracted to each other,” he explained about the controversial cave scene. In the scene, Jon shows Dany the writings he found on the wall made by the Children of the Forest which may convince her that the White Walkers are a very real threat.

At this point, “Game of Thrones” may be headed towards another incestuous storyline and fan theories grow wilder by the minute.

The answer may be given when the reunion between Bran and Jon happens and Jon's real parentage is confirmed. Perhaps, it has to wait until George RR Martin finishes his book saga to answer the questions. Until this happens, the showrunners have free rein on where to take the show and viewers need only to see where it leads.
