The Season 2 finale of the “Shadowhunters” more or less ended on a happy note for our heroes. Jace is alive, Simon and Maia are officially a couple and Malec reunited. However, the finale also left viewers questioning Jace, Simon and Luke’s fate. Showrunner Todd Slavkin teased what season 3 has in store for these characters.

Season 2 finale recap

Before we get to Slavkin’s interview, let us recap what happened in the Season 2 finale. In “Beside Still Water,” we saw Jonathan summon the demon Lilith in his dying breath, which opened a portal to hell and unleashed demon creatures over the city.

Alec managed to convince Magnus to seal the portal and help vanquish the wraiths. Meanwhile, Jace and Clary went to Lake Lyn to stop Valentine from raising the angel Raziel. The villain caught them by surprise instead. He stabbed Jace and rendered Clary unconscious. She woke up to see her father use Jace’s blood to summon the angel, which he did. Valentine asked Raziel for the destruction of all Downworlders but he refused. Father and daughter fought and we saw Clary furiously stab Valentine several times. Clary then asked the angel to bring back Jace from the dead.

Meanwhile, Luke and Simon went to the Seelie Court to rescue Maia. Clearly, Simon made a deal with the Seelie Queen in exchange for Maia’s return.

The finale ended with a victory party and a few surprises for Jace, Simon and Luke. We saw Luke’s partner bust him for being a werewolf, Simon went back to the Seelie Court and Jace in some kind of dizzy spell. The Season 2 finale ended with the dead Jonathan in a cave joined by a woman who called him "son."

What is happening to Jace?

Season 3 of the “Shadowhunters” is based on the fourth book in Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” books.

In the story, Jace becomes vulnerable to demonic possession, especially from Lilith, following his resurrection. It is safe to say that this is what happened to him in the Season 2 finale.

Is Simon stuck in the Seelie Court?

It is unclear what Simon bargained with the Seelie Queen in exchange for Maia’s safety. It could be his life or commitment to the queen.

Slavkin hinted that Simon might never return to the mortal world.” He has made a commitment, he’s stuck there. That was the vibe we were trying to give off,” Slavkin told TV Line.

Will Luke’s partner spill his secret about the werewolves?

Slavkin said to wait for Season 3 to find out why Luke’s partner is investigating his identity. He said there is more to learn about the “ugly and exciting truth about her.” “In Season 3, you find out what’s behind her and what was behind this investigation throughout Season 2B,” Slavkin added.
