Ryan Reynolds, more famous for his role as Deadpool, could soon add another iconic role to his acting credentials. Reports reveal he's being eyed to board a new Tom Clancy project.
Ryan Reynolds could soon head an international anti-terrorism task force in Tom Clancy's "Rainbow Six." The story will be based on the 1998 best-selling novel with the same title and the actor could play the lead character, John Clark.
Deadline reported that John Clark already appeared in two Tom Clancy movies such as 1994's "Clear and Present Danger" (played by Willem Dafoe) and 2002's "The Sum of All Fears" (played by Liev Schreiber).
If Ryan Reynolds agrees to the role, then there's a potential for a franchise development, similar to when Paramount did five of Tom Clancy's heroic Jack Ryan movies.
Jack Ryan TV show
The development for the John Clark franchise comes as Paramount has shifted its Jack Ryan franchise to television instead of movies. The studio is funding the “Jack Ryan” series with John Krasinski in the lead.
This show is set for a potential 2018 release via the streaming site Amazon Prime. It has been described as a 10-hour movie spliced into full-hour episodes. Filming for “Jack Ryan” is still underway in Washington with Carlton Cuse as showrunner.
From books to video games, to films
The novel was described as a suspense thriller where John Clark is featured as an ex-NAVY Seal who heads a covert team for the NATO. Following the book release, "Rainbow Six" also branched out as a shooting and tactical video game series from Ubisoft. There have, so far, been over a dozen game releases since 1998 and an upcoming mobile game is also being developed by Gameloft.
It's still unclear what the "Rainbow Six" film adaptation will tackle. Akiva Goldsmith has been attached to the development with a script that will be penned by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. Paramount has not yet set a potential theater date as talks have been quite loose among the people involved for now.
Reynolds busy with 'Deadpool' sequel
Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds has started filming for the "Deadpool" sequel last month. The actor revealed he is back on the set by sharing a post of himself in his character's costume. He was also seen at the X-Mansion.
"Deadpool" 2 will also star Josh Brolin as the superhero Cable. The actor has been gamely sharing his transformation as the character on his social media account.
"Deadpool" 2 is expected to be showing in theaters on June 1, 2018.
