"Game of Thrones" fans have waited long enough for the new season, and the premiere didn't disappoint. It seems that things are on its way back to being the full circle: half the Starks are back in Winterfell, Daenerys and her massive army arrived at Dragonstone, Cersei is back to her plotting, and winter is finally here.
However, one of the most satisfying scenes in the entire episode, according to Buzzfeed, is the first: Arya Stark finally getting her revenge on the Freys.
In case you don't remember, back in Season 3, Walder Frey ordered the massacre of Robb Stark, his wife Talia, their unborn child, the Stark matron Catelyn, and the rest of their supporters. Even Robb's direwolf, Grey Wind, did not survive the heinous massacre.
Three seasons later, Arya mastered the ability to "become no one" and abandoned the ways of the faceless men to finally get the revenge she wanted. It was glorious.
What did actress Maisie Williams think of the scene?
"When I heard first heard about the Faceless Men, I always thought it would be really cool if she switched faces with a leading character rather than an unknown person's face," the actress shared.
She also noted that she hopes viewers don't realize that the Walder Frey in the opening is Arya, but it seems she didn't get her wish.
Of course, elder Frey's speech clued many of the viewers in, but it still didn't ruin the surprise when they started choking to death, and Arya finally ripped her mask off as she said her parting words to his wife: "Tell them winter came for House Frey."
However, Arya's reveal is not only surprising for the audience, but for Williams's character as well. She told Entertainment Weekly, "It's so f***ed up! Even Arya is surprised she has so much power. In that last moment she's staring out at all those men dying, she's turned into a bit more of a monster than she's ever realized.
I don't think she's sad about that but she's got it on her mind."
The character certainly developed so much over the years, because in Season 1, who would think that the young tomboyish daughter of Ned Stark could turn into a mass murderer at such a young age? With Arya able to impersonate anyone in Westeros, she could hold power mightier than anyone could even realize.
Arya for the Iron Throne?
If her character can change her face as quickly as normal people could change their clothes on any normal day, then she has powers mightier than anyone could not even dare fathom. In fact, if she uses her powers well, Arya could go behind enemy lines, undetected and this could make her a contender for the Iron Throne.
Williams shared a dream she's had for the series finale, saying that at the back of her head, she wanted the series to end with someone sitting on the Iron Throne, only to be revealed later on that it was Arya, instead. There's no saying how this could end for her brother, Jon Snow, who is currently hailed King of the North, but as already established, Arya does have a dark side in her. Now that would be a plot twist fans could get on board with.
