"The Vampire Diaries" has ruled the vampire world for eight seasons and now leaving millions of its followers wanting more after Season 8, which officially ended in March this year. While showrunners and cast members of the hit series wrapped the final chapter with so much success in ratings, The CW has yet to give their say about the much-requested spin-off.
It is not known yet if the plans for the speculated spin-off will be on the way anytime soon, but the leeway for getting the series another franchise is reportedly being considered by the network for the time-being due to the massive demands.
From how the plots for the closing episode were sketched, showrunners and creators of the show may have already called it totally over for "The Vampire Diaries" after completing an eight-season run, but not to the many devoted fans, who have followed the trail of their well-admired characters since the first season.
Why the series deserves a spin-off
Needless to say that the mega-popular series had been very consistent in keeping good scores when it comes to ratings. Though ratings usually measure every show's performance, some fans would say that the unique and well-thought characters of "The Vampire Diaries" are already enough to give the series another try.
As expected, the season finale made an emotional send-off and did quite an impressive ending for reuniting everyone's favorite, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) for the last time. Season 8 was a blast because of these characters, who got their well-deserved happy ending, but it wasn't the case for Elena's ex, Stefan (Paul Wesley), who gave his final farewell to Mystic Falls after sacrificing himself in the latter to save his brother, Damon.
Shortly after "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 said goodbye after eight long years, the fans have since been talking about the possibility of a spin-off series. Amid several rumors and whispers, everything will be under wraps until The CW and show runners give the green light.
Villains who are potentially considered for a comeback
Any story is never complete without the bad ones and "The Vampire Diaries" is one of the most watched TV series that has brought unforgettable and haunting villains including Katherine Pierce, Niklause (Joseph Morgan), and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic). It's pretty obvious how everyone is so excited to see all of these characters once again, but it seems like a spin-off or any sequel series may not be taking place anytime soon.
While showrunner and producer Julie Plec previously said that she's definitely not closing any doors for another TVD story in the future, she was quick to say that all the cast members involved also deserve a long break from the spotlight.
"I think probably everybody involved with The Vampire Diaries needs a nice, long break from being a vampire or a witch, werewolf, etc," Plec said in her interview back in March, as reported by Romper.
