"The Vampire Diaries" series finale isn’t even a week old and fans are already crying out for more. Some of the requests come from fans who were unhappy with the quick, unsatisfying ending between Damon and Elena. However, others just weren’t ready to see the show finish. They wanted the show to continue, even if the bulk of the main cast had decided to leave.
Now it looks like all may not be over. Julie Plec has shared that there are ideas floating around for “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff. The problem is that none of the ideas with the Salvatores could ever work, and not just because of the main character who died in the finale.
Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley are done
Before the CW announced that “TVD” season 8 was going to be the last, a number of people on the cast had said it would be their own last season. Kat Graham and Ian Somerhalder were among the two most vocal members, but there were also rumors that Paul Wesley had had enough of playing Stefan Salvatore.
With the two main guys out of the running, any plans for a Salvatore spinoff becomes impossible. There is the possibility of the odd guest appearance, but it looks like the two are happy with potential future projects. Somerhalder is invested in charitable causes, while Wesley is taking another trip behind the scenes directing an episode of “Shadowhunters.”
Caroline could be involved in a ‘The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff
Both Plec and Kevin Williamson have admitted that Caroline and Alaric seem like the most likely candidates for a spinoff of “TVD.” This will make numerous fans happy, as many would like to see Klaus and Caroline rekindle their relationship.
A spinoff set with the school for witches would open the doors for Klaus to step back into Caroline’s life. The ending to the series certainly kept Klaroline shippers’ dreams alive.
There are no spinoff opportunities at this time. The showrunners are focusing on “The Originals” season 4, which will see Alaric appear for an episode. Maybe if “The Originals” gets another year there will be the chance for another “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff.
