The success of "The Handmaid's Tale" on Hulu is giving Netflix a run for its money. As it is nearing its finale, a lot of plot twists have been laid out by the scriptwriters, leaving the viewers on the edge of their seats. Before proceeding to read the rest of the article, be warned that this article contains major spoilers for "The Handmaid's Tale" Episode 9.
One of the characters who made a big ruckus in the said episode was Janine, whose personal problems have been building up in the previous episodes. Apparently, the emotional and physical abuse have taken a toll on her and she decided to take matters into her own hands by taking her baby with her and threatening to jump off a bridge.
Fortunately, Offred successfully took the baby away from Janine, moments before the latter took the jump and plummeted into the darkness. However, it seems like Janine has some similarities to a cat as she escaped death and survived the fall.
Offred's escape
As Janine and the people around her were still in shock with the attempted suicide, Offred managed to escape on her own with Janine's baby. It appeared that Offred has been keeping herself busy in "The Handmaid's Tale" episode 9 as she managed to change Moira's mind and convinced her to escape from Jezebels.
Meanwhile, Serena Joy's suspicion that Offred and the Commander have something between them is building up, and the last episode showed her entering the latter's office to find things out for herself.
Illicit relationships between commanders and handmaids seem to be a growing trend in "The Handmaid's Tale," which seems to be a highlighted part of the series that was originally not magnified in the novel.
Things are about to get messy
In the previous episodes of "The Handmaid's Tale," relationships between commanders and handmaids were already visited.
However, according to reports, upcoming episodes will reveal a messier atmosphere in Gilead, mainly because authority, sexuality, religion and the desire to get pregnant are overlapping with each other.
The said episodes are expected to brush through several sensitive subjects but the showrunners are confident that they will carry out the scenes with class.
Showrunner, Bruce Miller, has revealed that this is an effort to show the viewers a concrete picture of how things work in Gilead.
Meanwhile, Janine's survival from her attempted suicide was also considered as a pivotal point in the story. If there are people who were to be blamed for her behavior, it would be Aunt Lydia and the Commander. While the viewers are assured that Janine is still alive and will be sticking out in future episodes, her sanity is still a big question.
