Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) is about to travel back in time in Outlanderseason 3. The time traveler is going back to the 18th century to be with her first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) once again.

Hence, fans will see more of the 20th-century historian in the television series compared to what is written in “Voyager,” which the show is based. In fact, this might not be the last time that fans will see more of him as he might still appear in the future seasons.

Expanding on Frank’s story

Book fans perfectly know that the last time Claire will be in the 1900s is in “Voyager.” As Frank’s story is left in the 1800s, there is not much of him that will be tackled in the novel series by Diana Gabaldon.

“Outlander” Season 3 will feature more of Frank’s story by delving into Claire’s life while she is staying with him in Boston. To recall, she will get back to him through the rocks before the Battle of Culloden takes place. She is still pregnant that time with Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) child.

The importance of Frank’s character

In an interview with the show’s executive producer Ron Moore by TVGuide at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, the appearance of Frank is needed in "Outlander" Season 3. This is to give fans the knowledge who Claire is after she learns that Jamie is still alive.

In fact, he said that Frank's presence in the television series is very important. In the beginning of the story, Claire has been married to Frank.

In fact, she has been trying to get back to him the entire of series' first book, “Outlander."

Although Jamie is the love of her life, there is something in her that this man still holds, thus she feels like she needs to get back to him. So for Ron Moore, Frank is a strong and important character in the coming third chapter.

He even advised fans that if they want to understand more of Claire's story, they should know her relationship with Frank.

Possible return of Tobias Menzies

Aside from Claire, fans will also more of her daughter with Jamie, Brianna MacKenzie (Sophie Kelton), who becomes the adoptive child of Frank.

As Claire spent 20 years with Frank before he died, it is important to bring this storyline in “Outlander” Season 3 to know more of the show’s story.

And although “Voyager” will be the last time he and his counterpart Black Jack Randall will be mentioned in the narrative, this might not be the last time fans will see him.

As Tobias Menzies can perfectly portray the two roles, there is a big chance he will return in a flashback. This is whenever the two will be mentioned in the future stories.
