Tom Cruise fights a group of monsters in “The Mummy,” which also features Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Javier Boutet, Courtney Vance, Marwan Kenzari and Jake Johnson. “The Mummy” is interconnected with Universal’s new “Dark Universe” series. The studio strives to capitalize on the success of Marvel’s superhero film franchise, but is “The Mummy” worth a watch?
Directed by Alex Kurtzman and scripted by David Koepp, “The Mummy” hit the theaters on June 9, 2017. Early projections revealed that this film would gross something from $30 to $60 million in its opening weekend. Unfortunately, “The Mummy” has not touched the caliber of “Wonder Woman,” a superhero movie directed by Patty Jenkins.
Why did ‘The Mummy’ fail?
The film has failed because it lacks impressive action sequences. Even the presence of Sofia Boutella, Tom Cruise, and Dylan Kussman could not save “The Mummy” at the box office. The monster movie premiered at the State Theater, Sydney, on May 22, 2017, and was theoretically released on June 9.
It has received negative comments from critics and audiences.
As of June 14, 2017, the monster film has grossed $38 million in the United States and Canada, which is not a good beginning for a Tom Cruise movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film lacks an impressive story and focuses more on atmosphere and characters than on horror scares.
