One of the newest horror movies of 2017 is soon to make its debut on VOD, “Gremlin.” Though 2017 has provided a couple films featuring a monster, most of the horror Movies this year has been centered on ghosts or psychotic killers. So for those that need their monster-movie fix, “Gremlin” should do the trick. This reporter received an official screener of “Gremlin” and it did not disappoint. Directed by Ryan Bellgardt, the film stars Adam Hampton, Kristy K. Boone, Catcher Stair, Katie Burgess, Mike Waugh, and Caleb Milby.

‘Gremlin’ plot: Let the countdown begin

Adam, a husband and father, is given a mysterious box from a relative that contains an otherworldly creature. The box has a timer on it and as it winds down, the evil monster will kill everyone Adam cares about. The only way for Adam to get rid of the curse is by giving the box to someone he loves. As the countdown of ominous timer continues—of which, the results of the timer reaching its end is unknown—Adam can only imagine the horror that awaits. He can’t destroy it. He can’t escape it. He can only give it to someone he loves.

The horror of it all

If you like Horror Movies of the creature-feature variety, then you will most likely thoroughly enjoy “Gremlin.” The majority of the cast provide solid showings with Katie Burgess delivering a standout performance as Adam’s daughter, Anna.

Of course, the star of the film is the pet-sized monster itself. The movie builds genuine tension as the audience never knows where the little devil is hiding or when it will pop out next. Filled with a good amount of suspense and a few jump-scare moments, “Gremlin” is a fun-filled thrill ride that is, at times, very brutal.

If you enjoy horror movies with plenty of gore and action, then “Gremlin” will not disappoint you.

One of the ingredients that makes “Gremlin” standout from other independent horror movies of 2017 is that the filmmakers utilize high-quality CGI and special effects. Independent movies often struggle getting the funding for the proper computer-generated effects needed for the story, but that’s not an issue with this horror flick.

With its unique premise, solid performances, and impressive imagery, “Gremlin” is one of the more entertaining horror movies of 2017.
