Steve Burton originated the role of Jason Quartermaine-Morgan on "General Hospital" in 1995. He left the show in 2012 and began portraying Dylan McAvoy on "The Young and the Restless." ABC has confirmed that the actor will be returning to Port Charles but has not given any indication which character he will portray.
Steve Burton and Billy Miller
When Steve Burton left "General Hospital," he said it was to spend time with his family and he would not be taking on another role. Less than a year later, however, he began portraying Dylan on Y&R. Ironically at the same time, Billy Miller decided to exit his role as Billy Abbot on "The Young and the Restless" and he took over the role of Jason and left Genoa City for Port Charles.
Late in 2016, Burton announced he would be leaving "The Young and the Restless" and the rumors began. it was being reported that he was going back to "General Hospital" and expose Billy Miller's Jason as a fraud. Dylan was last seen on Y&R in January and now it is being reported that Steve Burton will indeed return to Port Charles. Fans are pondering three possibilities regarding the role he will be cast in.
What role with Steve Burton play on GH?
The first line of thought would be that Steve Burton will reclaim the role that he originated and Billy Miller will be exiting "General Hospital". There have however been no reports on a status change for Miller. Either the powers that be are keeping his exit a closely guarded secret or it is simply not a part of the equation.
If both men will be on the GH canvas this brings us to the second possibility, which is the tale of two Jason Morgan's.
This sounds intriguing and would be right out of Helena Cassadine's playbook This scenario, however, would have the residents of Port Charles and more importantly Sam Morgan trying to figure out which man is the real deal and who is the fraud.
The timing, however, is suspect. Spoiler alerts indicate that Sam's strange behavior will turn out to be the result of a brain tumor. It would really complicate the situation to add a second Jason when Sam is already hallucinating and having mood swings.
With no indication that Billy Miller is leaving there is the real possibility that both he and Steve Burton will be on the show together.
However, it would be absurd to have Sam and her family dealing with a medical crisis and the two husband situation simultaneously. By process of elimination, this would logically indicate that the third scenario is the correct one and Steve Burton is returning as another character. Devoted fans of "General Hospital" realize that the storylines do not always take logic into consideration.
