With "Guardians Of The Galaxy 2" making millions overseas, the film has been receiving positive reviews from moviegoers and critics alike. The James Gunn-directed offering, which is a sequel to the 2015 breakout hit, now features more cast members and characters on top of returning faces Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. One character who was promised to have a larger role in the sequel is Karen Gillan's Nebula, who appeared in the first film as one of the antagonists.

Little did fans know that she was in fact supposed to meet her untimely demise in the first film, Gillan herself admitted.

Nebula's second life

In "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," Karen Gillan's Nebula has switched sides. What once was the right hand of Ronan in the first film turned out to be one of the new Guardian recruits who is setting out to save the galaxy in this year's blockbuster film. Gillan told Digital Spy, "I definitely had a feeling that there was room for the character to expand in the future, but she was originally supposed to die in the first movie."

"Then I found out that [Nebula] was coming back in the second movie," the 29-year old actress, who is an advocate for more female-driven films, explained.

"We got to explore all these amazing things about her past and her relationship with Gamora, her sister, so I was really happy."

'Selfie' star pushing for more 'female-driven' movies

While Marvel seems to be on top of their cinematic game, there's one thing DC has done that they have not yet — create a superhero film with a female lead. DC's highly anticipated "Wonder Woman" is already arriving this July, but Marvel's "Captain Marvel" is still in the works and is set for a 2019 release, starring Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Brie Larson. "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" star Karen Gillan of course, is in full support of "Captain Marvel."

"I think it would be amazing to see a female-driven film like that," Gillan admitted.

"We could do with some more females at the forefront." That, of course, is something that Marvel is slowly working on with "Captain Marvel." Most of the other films in Phase 3 still involve mostly male characters, such as Ant-Man, Black Panther, and the young Spider-Man. Of course, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, and Evangeline Lilly's The Wasp are set to appear over the the next years in various films, with Lilly's The Wasp taking a larger billing in next year's "Ant-Man and the Wasp."

For now, fans can catch Karen Gillan as Nebula and Zoe Saldana as Gamora in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," which opens in the United States on May 5. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is arriving on July 5, and "Thor: Ragnarok" on November 3.
